About

Laura Zhang grew up on an outlying island of Hong Kong, in a mixed Chinese and English household. She is an abstract artist and arts facilitator with a multi-faceted approach to her creative practice. Studying Fine Art at the University of Leeds, Zhang researched fractal drawings, meditative mark-making and the emergence of identity from third-space. She then returned to Hong Kong where she developed her practice as an artist-educator, working with the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Foundation and facilitating early childhood art workshops. Zhang went on to become the Curator and Head of Content at the Latin American and Spanish gallery, Puerta Roja, working with prominent figures in Op Art and Generative Art such as Carlos Cruz-Diez and Miguel Chevalier.

Zhang continued her studio practice with her first solo exhibition titled Step by Step in 2018. She went on to found an art gallery for emerging artists and first-time collectors in collaboration with the electronic music venue, Mihn Club. From 2018 to 2021 she was the Director and Curator of Mihn Gallery, where she exhibited illustrators, graphic designers, photographers and street artists in a gallery setting.

Zhang has now developed her process in oil painting with symphonies of colour, texture, gradient and repetition that explore relationships of landscape, environment and self. She exhibited her paintings in the 2022 duo show, Wild Thing, at Parallel Space, Sham Shui Po’s leading independent art space. Her works are included in the collections of Adriana Alvarez-Nichol, the previous co-president of HKAGA, and Howard Bilton, chairman and founder of The Sovereign Group.
